An Introduction to Bearers of the Light

 
Bearers of the Light is the diocesan certification program for:
 
  • Parish and School Catechists
  • Youth Ministry Volunteers
  • Coordinators of Religious Education
  • Youth Ministers
  • Directors of Religious Education
The focus of this program is to provide growth in knowledge and skills, as well as spiritual enrichment for the groups mentioned above.
 
Bearers of the Light consists of three different certification levels:
 
1. Catechist Certification Track I - seven introductory courses in theology and the ministry of teaching for catechists ministering to students in grades preschool through twelve and adult learners.
a. Track I requirements should be completed within three years from start/hiring date.
b. A bachelor degree or higher in Religious Education, Theology, Pastoral Studies or the equivalent satisfies the requirements for Track I.
c. A Basic, Advanced, or Credential certificate issued through the Diocese of Honolulu Servant Leadership program satisfies the requirements for Track I.
d. Upon approval of the diocesan Director of Religious Education, college courses in theology, faculty in-services in religious education, parish education programs may be accepted toward Track I certification.
 
2. Catechist Certification Track II - an introductory course in teaching methods for grades preschool through high school and adult learners.
a. Track I completion is not required for participation in Track II.
b. A bachelor degree or higher in Religious Education, Theology, Pastoral Studies or the equivalent satisfies the requirements for Track II.
c. An Advanced or Credential certificate issued through the Diocese of Honolulu Servant Leadership program satisfies the requirements for Track II.
d. Upon approval of the diocesan Director of Religious Education, college courses in theology, faculty in-services in religious education, parish education programs may be accepted toward Track II certification.
 
3.Ongoing Formation Certification - a variety of course offerings to promote life-long formation in faith.
a. Two ongoing formation courses every three years are required to maintain certification.
b. College courses in theology, faculty in-services in religious education, parish education programs, and courses taken at Catholic conferences, workshops, seminars, etc. are accepted toward ongoing formation certification.
 
4. Master Catechist
The Certificate in Catechesis mobilizes the resources of the University of Dayton in partnership with the Diocese of Honolulu to provide consistent, high quality training and education for persons involved in catechetical ministries. Upon successful completion of the Certificate of Catechesis, participants will receive both a certificate of completion from the University of Dayton, Virtual Learning Community for Faith Formation (VLCFF); a certificate of recognition as Master Catechist in the Diocese of Honolulu; and equivalency credits for catechist certification courses 103, 104, 107, 109, 110, 111.
b. Master's Degree in Theology, Catechesis, or related field.
 
5. Safe Environment Mandate
If you are an adult whose service in catechetical ministries involves on-going, unsupervised contact with children under age 18, you must complete background screening and Safe Environment training as mandated by the Diocese of Honolulu.
