In 2013, Pope Francis declared that a Year of Consecrated Life be celebrated throughout the world. The logo used in the Diocese of Honolulu has been adapted from the USCCB logo with the addition of our island chain and a remembrance of the first missionaries, the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary priests and brothers who established the faith to the islands. The US Conference of Catholic Bishops’ (USCCB) Committee on Clergy, Consecrated Life and Vocations is coordinating the commemoration of this special year. Plans include a series of initiatives and resources to help people learn about the consecrated life of religious men and women. In Hawaii, we have our travelling exhibit recognizing the various religious men and women religious who helped form the church, educational system, healthcare, social ministry and other foundational works of service in the islands.
The Year of Consecrated Life will begin on the First Sunday of Advent, the weekend of November 29, 2014, and end on February 2, 2016, the World Day of Consecrated life. The year also marks the 50th anniversary of Perfectae Caritatis, a decree on religious life, and Lumen Gentium, the Second Vatican Council’s constitution on the Church. Its purpose, as stated by the Vatican is to “make a grateful remembrance of the recent past” while embracing “the future with hope.”
